Turbulence Icons

Blue circles mean a smooth ride was reported in the area.
Green triangles mean light turbulence was reported in the area.
Orange triangles mean moderate turbulence was reported in the area.
Red triangles mean severe turbulence was reported in the area.

The numbers indicate at what flight level the incident occured. Add two zeros to convert to feet. Typical cruising altitude is between 25,000 and 40,000 feet.

Turbulence Types


Light Occupants may feel a slight strain against belts or shoulder straps. Unsecured objects may be displaced slightly. Food service may be conducted and little or no difficulty is encountered in walking.
Moderate Occupants feel definite strains against seat belts or shoulder straps. Unsecured objects are dislodged. Food service and walking are difficult.
Severe Occupants are forced violently against seat belts or shoulder straps. Unsecured objects are tossed about. Food service and walking are impossible.
